By means of this programme the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports R&D projects dealing with the sustainable development of urban regions on the basis of the FONA³ Research for Sustainable Development framework programme and pursuing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Federal Government’s Internationalization Strategy and the New Urban Agenda.

The aim of the funding measure is to develop and test locally-adapted strategies for the sustainable development of urban regions and to encourage the strategies’ permanent implementation in order to improve ecological factors (emissions, energy and resources efficiency, etc.) and to increase urban resilience.
