Build4People is part of the funding measure “Sustainable Development of Urban Regions” (SURE), of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The 2nd volume of science magazine “SURE Solutions”, edited by Katharina M. Borgmann, Jörg Rainer Noenning & Frank Schwartze, has just been released: https://www.sustainable-urban-regions.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/SURE_Solutions_2.pdf
In the SURE Solutions editorial it is stated that the magazine brings together applied strategies in sustainable urban development which are shaped by local conditions, diverse stakeholders, and evolving reflexive practices. From high-resolution UAV1 mapping in Phnom Penh to participatory heritage preservation in Thailand, or flood risk collaboration across provinces in Vietnam, the contributions underscore the nuanced, often non-linear nature of knowledge transferred into practice. Instead of promoting one-size-fits-all models, these articles reflect on a spectrum of context-sensitive approaches—technological, cultural, ecological, and social. Transfer happens here, not as a straightforward application of solutions, but as a process of careful translation, re-alignment, and co-production.
Finally, this volume invites readers to engage with the ethics, challenges, and opportunities inherent in knowledge transfer, while highlighting the importance of local ownership, mutual learning, and adaptive governance.
While among the 1st volume of SURE Solutions was an activity report about the Build4People Sustainable Building Arena, the current volume contains a report about the use of thermal UAV technology to enhance urban resilience in Phnom Penh, collaboratively authored by Gulam Mohiuddin and Jan-Peter Mund, Chea Chetha, Eun Sambath, Sanara Hor and Michael Waibel. It describes the use of thermal Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for monitoring urban land cover (i.e., green spaces), focusing on the potential to monitor urban ecosystems of the rapidly urbanising Phnom Penh. Furthermore, the current volume contains a news announcement about a Build4People conference presentation at @BMZ about gender-sensitive and inclusive building in Cambodia collaboratively authored by Christina Karagianni, Anke Blöbaum and Michael Waibel.
Build4People would like to express its sincere gratitude to the SURE Solutions editor-in-chiefs for compiling this meaningful publication.
